Thread & Spider Vein Laser Treatment
Treating Small Visible Blood Vessels
Thread veins and spider veins are small superficial blood vessels that become visible through the skin. They can appear as fine red, purple or blue lines, particularly around the nose, cheeks and other areas of the face, although similar small vessels can also occur on the legs and body.
They are usually harmless, but some patients choose treatment because the vessels remain permanently visible or become more noticeable over time. At YT Medical, Laser Thread Vein Treatment begins with assessment of the vessel type, colour, depth and location so that the most appropriate treatment can be selected.
How Does Vascular Laser Treatment Work?
Appropriate vascular laser technology directs controlled light energy towards haemoglobin within the blood vessel. The energy is preferentially absorbed by the target vessel, producing controlled heating that causes it to close or become damaged. The treated vessel can then gradually become less visible as the body responds.
Different vessels require different wavelengths, pulse durations and treatment settings. A fine red vessel close to the skin surface behaves differently from a larger blue leg vein, so one standard laser setting cannot appropriately treat every vascular concern.
The objective is to reduce the visibility of suitable vessels while minimising unnecessary thermal effects within the surrounding skin.
Facial Thread Veins
Laser treatment can be particularly useful for selected small vessels across areas such as the nose, cheeks and central face. Facial telangiectasia may develop independently or occur alongside conditions such as rosacea.
Where widespread facial redness or recurrent flushing accompanies the vessels, the underlying skin condition should also be considered. Treating individual vessels without addressing active rosacea will not prevent further redness or new vessels developing.
Several treatment sessions may be required where vessels are extensive or where different sizes and depths are present.
Spider Veins on the Legs
Small leg telangiectasia can also sometimes respond to vascular laser treatment, but laser is not automatically the first choice for every visible leg vein.
Larger spider veins, reticular veins or varicose veins may be better suited to Sclerotherapy or vascular assessment, depending on their size and whether underlying venous insufficiency is suspected. Symptoms including persistent swelling, aching, skin changes or prominent varicose veins may warrant investigation before cosmetic treatment.
YT Medical can therefore assess whether the visible vessel is appropriate for laser or whether another pathway is more suitable.
What Happens During Treatment?
The treatment area is assessed and a patch test may be recommended before a full session. Laser energy is then delivered directly over the selected vessels. Patients may feel brief heat, stinging or a snapping sensation as individual pulses are applied.
Temporary redness, swelling, bruising or darkening of the vessel can occur afterwards. Some treated vessels disappear relatively quickly while others become progressively less visible over the following weeks.
Potential complications include blistering, burns and temporary or persistent changes in pigmentation, with scarring being uncommon but possible. Sun exposure can influence pigmentation risk, so appropriate pre-treatment and post-treatment guidance should be followed.
Results and Recurrence
Successful treatment can significantly reduce the visibility of suitable thread veins, but it cannot prevent new vessels developing elsewhere. Genetics, sun exposure, rosacea, hormonal factors, ageing and underlying venous function can all influence vascular changes over time.
A course may therefore be recommended initially, with maintenance treatment considered only if new vessels later become troublesome.
Laser or Sclerotherapy?
Laser treatment and Sclerotherapy both have roles in vascular treatment, but they are not interchangeable. Laser is often particularly useful for smaller superficial vessels and facial thread veins, while Sclerotherapy can be more appropriate for selected leg veins.
Your consultation allows us to identify the type of vessel first and recommend the treatment most appropriate to its size, depth and location.
