Removing or Correcting Unwanted Cosmetic Pigment

Semi-Permanent Makeup Removal is used where cosmetic tattooing has produced an unwanted colour, shape or residual pigment. This can include microblading, powder brows and other forms of semi-permanent cosmetic pigmentation, whether the objective is complete removal or sufficient fading to allow the area to be corrected or retreated.

Pico Laser technology can be effective for selected cosmetic pigments, but SPMU removal requires particular caution because cosmetic tattoo inks are not always comparable with conventional body tattoo ink. Their composition and colour can vary, and some pigments contain materials capable of changing colour when exposed to laser energy.

Why Can SPMU Behave Differently?

Eyebrow and other cosmetic pigments are often formulated from mixtures of colours rather than one individual pigment. As darker components are removed, underlying red, orange, yellow or other tones may become more visible. This can mean an eyebrow tattoo appears to change colour during the removal process before further fading occurs.

Some cosmetic pigments can also undergo paradoxical darkening, where laser exposure causes a previously light, flesh-coloured, red or pink pigment to become darker rather than lighter. Certain iron- or titanium-containing pigments have historically been associated with this type of reaction.

A small test area may therefore be particularly important before treating a larger region. The response can then be assessed before deciding whether further laser treatment is appropriate.

What Does Treatment Involve?

Following consultation and assessment of the pigment, a suitable Pico Laser wavelength and treatment setting is selected where laser removal is considered appropriate. Energy is delivered across the unwanted pigment, causing suitable particles to fragment so they can gradually be cleared during the weeks following treatment.

Redness, swelling and tenderness may occur afterwards, and temporary whitening, pinpoint bleeding, blistering or crusting can develop depending on the pigment and treatment intensity. The area must be allowed to heal fully between appointments.

Several sessions are commonly required. The number cannot be predicted precisely because pigment composition, depth, number of previous SPMU treatments and individual skin response all influence clearance.

Eyebrow Hair and Future SPMU

Patients frequently worry about existing eyebrow hair when considering microblading or eyebrow tattoo removal. The treatment is directed towards pigment within the skin, but temporary changes to surrounding hairs can occur and this will be discussed as part of your treatment planning.

If the objective is to have new SPMU applied afterwards, adequate fading and skin recovery should occur before further cosmetic tattooing. Your new SPMU practitioner may also have a preferred degree of clearance before beginning corrective work.

Realistic Expectations

Laser treatment can substantially improve unwanted cosmetic pigmentation, but complete removal cannot be guaranteed. Residual colours may become apparent as darker components fade, and some pigments may not respond safely or predictably to the laser.

Where test treatment suggests that laser is unsuitable, we will discuss this rather than continuing simply because removal has already been started.
