Longer-Term Management of Unwanted Body Hair

Body Laser Hair Removal provides a longer-term approach to reducing unwanted hair across areas where shaving, waxing or other temporary removal methods may need to be repeated frequently. Treatment directs controlled light energy towards pigment within suitable hair follicles, with the aim of progressively reducing their ability to produce hair.

At YT Medical, treatment is planned according to the area being treated, skin type, hair colour, hair thickness and individual response. Larger areas can be treated efficiently, while smaller regions can be targeted individually or combined into a personalised treatment programme.

Which Areas Can Be Treated?

Body Laser Hair Removal may be considered for areas including the underarms, arms, legs, chest, abdomen, back, shoulders and selected areas of the bikini or intimate region. Treatment can be undertaken on one area or several areas depending on the patient’s requirements.

Hair characteristics are important when determining suitability. Darker, more strongly pigmented hairs generally provide a clearer target for laser energy, whereas white, grey, very light blonde and some red hairs may respond poorly because they contain insufficient pigment. Fine body hair also behaves differently from thicker terminal hair, so assessment helps determine whether treatment is likely to provide worthwhile reduction.

Why Are Several Treatments Required?

Individual hairs move independently through different stages of a natural growth cycle. Laser treatment is most effective when suitable hairs are in an active growth phase, and only a proportion of the follicles within an area will be at this stage during any one appointment.

A course of treatment is therefore required to progressively target different groups of follicles. Treatment intervals vary according to the body area and stage of the programme. Over time, patients may notice less regrowth and changes in the density, thickness and speed of hair returning.

The number of sessions required varies between individuals, and occasional maintenance treatment may be considered where new or previously inactive follicles produce hair later.

Preparing for Body Laser Treatment

Waxing, epilating and plucking generally need to be avoided during a laser course because these methods remove the hair from the follicle that the laser is attempting to target. Shaving can normally be used instead, with specific instructions provided regarding when to shave before your appointment.

Recent tanning and significant sun exposure are also important because increased skin pigmentation can affect treatment safety. Fake tan and products left on the treatment area may need to be removed before treatment, and any significant change in the skin since your previous appointment should be discussed before proceeding.

Treatment and Recovery

During treatment, the handpiece is moved systematically across the selected area while controlled energy is delivered. Sensation varies between patients and treatment sites, particularly where hair is thicker or denser.

Temporary redness, warmth or mild swelling around follicles can occur afterwards. Less common complications include blistering, burns and changes in pigmentation. Appropriate settings, skin assessment and adherence to preparation and aftercare guidance are therefore important throughout the treatment course.
