Laser Hair Removal
Long-Term Reduction of Unwanted Hair
Laser Hair Removal provides a longer-term approach to managing unwanted facial and body hair than repeated shaving, waxing or plucking. Treatment uses controlled light energy directed towards pigment within suitable hair follicles, generating heat that can impair the follicle’s ability to produce future hair.
At YT Medical, laser hair removal is delivered using advanced SHR technology, with treatment settings selected according to the patient’s skin, hair and treatment area. The objective is progressive hair reduction rather than promising that every individual hair will be permanently removed.
Which Areas Can Be Treated?
Laser Hair Removal can be used across many areas of the face and body, including the face, underarms, arms, legs, back, chest, abdomen and selected intimate areas. Smaller individual areas or larger combinations can be treated, and Full Body Laser Hair Removal is also available for patients wanting a more comprehensive programme.
Treatment works best where there is sufficient pigment within the hair for the light energy to target. Very light blonde, white, grey or some red hairs may respond poorly because they contain relatively little suitable pigment. Hair colour and thickness are therefore assessed before a treatment course is recommended.
Why Is a Course of Treatment Needed?
Hair follicles move through a natural growth cycle, and laser treatment is most effective during particular stages of active growth. At any one appointment, only a proportion of hairs will be in the most responsive phase, which is why repeated sessions are required at appropriate intervals.
Over a course, patients generally notice that treated hair becomes progressively reduced, finer or slower to return. The number of treatments required varies according to the body area, hair characteristics, hormonal influences and individual response. Occasional maintenance treatments may also be useful for some patients over time.
What Does Treatment Feel Like?
During treatment, the laser handpiece is passed systematically across the selected area while controlled energy is delivered to the follicles. Sensation varies according to the treatment site, hair thickness and individual sensitivity, and the technology is designed to make treatment manageable across both smaller and larger areas.
Temporary redness, warmth or mild follicular swelling can occur afterwards. Less common risks include blistering, burns and temporary or persistent pigmentation changes, particularly if inappropriate treatment settings are used or the skin has recently been exposed to significant sunlight.
Preparing for Laser Hair Removal
Patients will be given preparation instructions before treatment. Waxing, plucking and other methods that physically remove the hair from the follicle generally need to be avoided during the course because the follicle needs to remain present for laser treatment to target it. Shaving may instead be recommended at the appropriate time before an appointment.
Recent tanning and significant sun exposure can also affect treatment safety. Skin should be assessed before each session, and treatment may need to be postponed where tanning or another change increases the risk of an adverse reaction.
Patch Testing and Consultation
A consultation and patch test may be required before beginning a full treatment course. This provides an opportunity to assess the skin and hair, discuss medical history and medication, establish realistic expectations and observe how the skin responds to the proposed settings.
Laser Hair Removal is not suitable for every patient or every type of unwanted hair. If excessive hair growth has developed suddenly or is accompanied by other symptoms suggesting a hormonal or medical cause, further investigation may also be appropriate.
