Skin Resurfacing
Renewing the Surface and Structure of the Skin
CO₂ Laser Skin Resurfacing is designed for patients seeking a more intensive approach to uneven texture, fine lines and broader visible changes in skin quality. Fractional CO₂ technology creates controlled microscopic treatment zones within both the surface and deeper layers of the skin, stimulating a healing response that replaces damaged tissue and encourages progressive collagen remodelling.
Unlike treatments focused primarily on hydration or superficial exfoliation, CO₂ resurfacing deliberately creates a more significant controlled injury. This can produce a greater degree of tissue renewal in suitable patients, but it also means more noticeable recovery and a higher level of treatment commitment.
What Can Skin Resurfacing Improve?
Fractional resurfacing may be considered where the skin has developed rough or uneven texture, fine lines, enlarged-looking pores, selected sun-related changes or general loss of smoothness and firmness. It can be particularly useful where lighter treatments have limited ability to address the depth of the concern.
Skin resurfacing should not, however, be used indiscriminately for every pigment irregularity or skin lesion. Some pigmentation requires diagnosis before cosmetic treatment, and certain conditions may be unsuitable for laser. Your consultation therefore includes assessment of the skin itself rather than simply treating any visible mark with resurfacing technology.
Treatment and Recovery
The intensity of CO₂ resurfacing can be adjusted, meaning recovery differs between patients. Following treatment, redness, heat and swelling are expected, and the skin may subsequently feel rough, dry or tight as microscopic treatment areas heal. Small areas of crusting or peeling can develop before fresher skin becomes visible beneath.
The early healing period is only one part of the process. Redness can persist for longer in some patients, while collagen remodelling and changes in skin texture continue gradually over the following months. Sun protection is particularly important during recovery because recently treated skin is more vulnerable to unwanted pigmentation.
Patients should also allow for a genuine period of visible downtime rather than approaching fractional CO₂ treatment as a procedure that can always be concealed immediately afterwards.
How Does It Compare With Other Skin Treatments?
Medical Microneedling, Chemical Peels, Pico Laser and regenerative treatments can all improve selected aspects of skin quality, but they act at different depths and involve different recovery profiles. CO₂ Fractional Laser is generally considered where a stronger resurfacing and collagen-remodelling effect is appropriate.
This does not make it automatically superior. Patients with relatively mild concerns may achieve a suitable result through a less intensive procedure, while certain skin types may carry a greater pigmentation risk with aggressive ablative treatment. The right option depends on the balance between desired improvement, skin characteristics and acceptable downtime.
Realistic Results
Skin resurfacing can make the complexion appear smoother and improve selected textural or age-related changes, but it does not permanently stop skin ageing or remove every imperfection. Results vary according to treatment depth, baseline skin condition, age and individual healing.
A personalised consultation allows us to explain the degree of improvement that may realistically be achievable before deciding whether CO₂ resurfacing is appropriate.
