CO₂ Fractional Laser is an ablative laser treatment used to improve selected concerns involving skin texture, scarring, fine lines, sun-related damage and loss of skin quality. The laser delivers controlled carbon-dioxide energy into the skin, creating microscopic treatment zones while leaving areas of surrounding tissue untreated. This fractional approach allows a controlled healing response to take place while stimulating longer-term collagen and tissue remodelling.

What Can CO₂ Fractional Laser Treat?

CO₂ Fractional Laser may be considered for uneven skin texture, lines and wrinkles, acne scarring, selected surgical or traumatic scars, stretch marks and broader resurfacing concerns. It can also be used where age-related changes in the skin would benefit from a more intensive collagen-remodelling treatment than a superficial peel or lighter skin procedure.

Different concerns require different treatment depths and settings. A patient with mild surface texture changes does not necessarily require the same treatment as somebody with established acne scarring, and increasing laser intensity does not automatically create a better result. Treatment is planned around the minimum appropriate level required to address the concern while managing recovery and risk.

What Does Treatment Involve?

Before treatment, the skin is assessed and appropriate preparation discussed. During the procedure, the fractional laser creates a pattern of microscopic columns within the selected area. Anaesthetic measures may be used depending on treatment intensity and location, and patients can expect heat or discomfort during the procedure.

Following treatment, the skin commonly becomes red, warm and swollen. Dryness, crusting, peeling or a roughened appearance can develop as the treated surface heals. Recovery varies considerably according to treatment strength, area and individual healing response, and redness may remain visible after the initial surface healing has taken place. Detailed aftercare will be provided, particularly regarding cleansing, moisturisation and sun protection.

Results, Risks and Treatment Courses

Improvement develops progressively as the skin heals and collagen remodelling continues over the following weeks and months. Some patients may achieve worthwhile improvement following a single stronger procedure, while others benefit from a staged course using settings appropriate to their skin and concern.

CO₂ Fractional Laser carries greater downtime and risk than many lighter skin treatments. Possible complications include prolonged redness, infection, acne or cold-sore flare-ups, delayed healing, pigmentation changes and scarring. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is an especially important consideration in patients with skin types more prone to pigment alteration, and suitability must therefore be assessed carefully.

The treatment can improve skin and scar appearance, but it cannot guarantee flawless skin or completely remove established scars.
