Carboxytherapy
Supporting the Scalp Through Controlled CO₂ Therapy
Carboxytherapy is a minimally invasive treatment involving the controlled administration of medical carbon dioxide beneath the skin.
Within hair restoration, it has been investigated for its potential to influence local circulation and the environment surrounding functioning hair follicles.
At YT Medical, carboxytherapy is considered as a supportive treatment rather than a cure for hair loss, and suitability is established through assessment first.
How Does Carboxytherapy Work?
Small amounts of carbon dioxide are introduced into selected areas of the scalp using a fine needle.
The presence of carbon dioxide causes a local physiological response that includes changes in blood flow and tissue oxygenation.
These effects have led to carboxytherapy being investigated as an adjunctive treatment for several forms of hair loss.
Who May Be Suitable?
Carboxytherapy may be considered for selected patients experiencing:
- Male Pattern Hair Loss
- Female Pattern Hair Loss
- Progressive thinning
- Reduced hair density
- Selected non-scarring forms of alopecia
The underlying diagnosis remains important.
Carboxytherapy cannot replace follicles that have been permanently destroyed by established scarring alopecia, and patients with active inflammatory scalp disease may require other management first.
What Does the Evidence Show?
Published clinical research into carboxytherapy for hair loss remains relatively limited.
A controlled study involving patients with androgenetic alopecia and alopecia areata reported improvements in clinical and dermoscopic measures following treatment. However, some improvement in androgenetic alopecia reduced during follow-up, suggesting that carboxytherapy may be more appropriately regarded as an adjunct rather than a definitive standalone treatment.
A separate study in patchy alopecia areata found improvement with carboxytherapy, although intralesional corticosteroid treatment and combined treatment produced greater regrowth in that study.
What Does Treatment Involve?
Treatment is normally provided as a course, with the number and frequency of sessions determined according to the patient’s treatment plan.
Temporary discomfort, redness or sensitivity can occur around the injection sites.
Because hair growth is gradual, any response should be assessed over an appropriate period rather than immediately after treatment.
Part of a Personalised Hair Restoration Plan
Carboxytherapy may sometimes be considered alongside other appropriate treatments such as:
- PRP or PRF
- Regenerative therapies
- Medical Microneedling
- Laser Hair Retention Therapy™
- Other hair and scalp therapies
Combination treatment is recommended only where there is a clear reason for each element.
