A Newer Platelet-Based Approach to Hair Restoration

Platelet-Rich Fibrin, or PRF, is an autologous regenerative treatment prepared from the patient’s own blood.

Like PRP, it uses naturally occurring platelets and other blood components as part of a hair-restoration programme, but the preparation method differs.

PRF produces a fibrin-rich preparation that is increasingly being used within regenerative medicine and hair restoration.

At YT Medical, PRF is considered following assessment of the patient’s hair loss, scalp condition and wider treatment objectives.

How Is PRF Prepared?

A blood sample is taken and processed using a specialist centrifuge.

The processing method is designed to create a preparation containing platelets within a fibrin-rich matrix alongside other naturally occurring cellular components.

The resulting PRF is then introduced into selected areas of the scalp.

Because the treatment is autologous, the material being used originates from the patient’s own blood.

Who May Be Suitable?

PRF may be considered for selected patients experiencing:

• Male Pattern Hair Loss
• Female Pattern Hair Loss
• Progressive thinning
• Reduced hair density
• Follicular miniaturisation
• Early changes where viable follicles remain

As with other regenerative hair treatments, assessment of the underlying condition is important.

PRF cannot recreate follicles that have been permanently destroyed by established scarring hair loss.

PRF or PRP?

Both PRP and PRF are prepared from the patient’s own blood, but their preparation and composition differ.

PRP currently has a larger body of published research relating to androgenetic hair loss. PRF is a newer approach with an emerging evidence base and increasing use within regenerative medicine.

Rather than presenting one as universally superior to the other, YT Medical considers which option is most appropriate for the individual patient.

What Results Can I Expect?

Hair restoration takes time, and treatment response varies.

Where PRF is appropriate, the objective may be to support existing follicles, improve the appearance of density or form part of a broader strategy for maintaining existing hair.

No treatment can guarantee a specific amount of new growth.
