NHS Hair Replacement Services
Hair Replacement Support for Eligible NHS Patients
YT Medical provides hair replacement support for eligible patients accessing wigs or other appropriate hair-replacement solutions through NHS pathways. These services may be relevant to people experiencing hair loss as a result of cancer treatment, alopecia or other medical conditions where an NHS referral, voucher or approved supplier arrangement is available.
Because NHS funding and referral arrangements can vary between hospitals, Trusts and individual circumstances, the exact entitlement and process should be confirmed before your appointment. If you have been given a referral, prescription, voucher or any written information relating to NHS wig provision, please bring this with you so that we can establish which options are available within your particular pathway.
A Private and Supportive Consultation
Medical hair loss can develop at a difficult time in a patient’s life, particularly where it occurs alongside cancer treatment, autoimmune disease or another significant health condition. Our aim is to provide a private, respectful consultation in which you can consider your options at your own pace. We can discuss the level of coverage required, preferred style, colour, fit, comfort and whether you would like to recreate your existing appearance or choose something different.
Where hair loss is expected because of upcoming medical treatment, arranging a consultation before significant shedding begins can sometimes make it easier to match an existing hairstyle, colour and density. Patients are equally welcome to attend once hair loss has already occurred.
Choosing Your Hair Replacement
Depending on the NHS pathway available and the patient’s individual needs, options may include suitable medical wigs or other approved hair replacement solutions. The best choice depends on factors such as the extent of hair loss, scalp sensitivity, expected duration of hair loss, preferred style and day-to-day maintenance.
Where the NHS contribution does not cover the full cost of a particular option, it may be possible for patients to contribute privately towards an alternative or upgraded solution, depending on the applicable scheme. Any costs will be explained clearly before an order is placed.
Ongoing Care and Support
We can provide advice on caring for your hair replacement, including washing, styling, storage and suitable products. For patients whose natural hair is expected to return, we can also discuss how their needs may change as regrowth develops and when a different type of hair replacement may become more suitable.
Hair loss associated with medical treatment can change quickly, so comfort and fit may need to be reviewed over time.
