Understanding the Cause of Hair Loss

Hair loss is not a single condition. Changes in hair density, excessive shedding, localised patches of hair loss and scalp symptoms can occur for many different reasons, and the appropriate approach depends on identifying what may be happening.

Some forms of hair loss develop gradually over many years. Others appear suddenly following illness, hormonal change, physical or emotional stress, or as part of an inflammatory or autoimmune condition. Hair loss may be temporary, progressive or, in some scarring conditions, capable of causing permanent damage to the hair follicle.

At YT Medical, our approach begins with assessment rather than treatment selection.

Conditions We Assess

Our Hair Restoration Centre supports patients experiencing a broad range of hair and scalp concerns, including:

  • Female Pattern Hair Loss
  • Male Pattern Hair Loss
  • Telogen Effluvium
  • Alopecia Areata
  • Traction Alopecia
  • Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia (FFA)
  • Central Centrifugal Cicatricial Alopecia (CCCA)
  • Lichen Planopilaris (LPP)
  • Scarring Alopecia
  • Seborrhoeic Dermatitis
  • Scalp Psoriasis

Different conditions can sometimes produce similar symptoms. More than one type of hair loss may also occur at the same time, which is why an individual assessment can be more useful than choosing a treatment based on appearance alone. For example, telogen effluvium can coexist with or reveal underlying pattern hair loss.

Hair & Scalp Assessment

Your consultation begins with a detailed discussion of your concerns and the history of your hair or scalp changes.

Depending on your presentation, assessment may consider:

  • The pattern and distribution of hair loss
  • The extent and rate of shedding
  • Hair density and follicular appearance
  • Scalp health
  • Family history
  • Relevant medical history
  • Medication and lifestyle factors
  • Recent illness, surgery or significant life events
  • Nutritional or hormonal factors
  • Previous hair-loss treatments

Where appropriate, further investigation may include digital trichoscopy, microscopy or blood testing.

If your presentation requires assessment or treatment outside the scope of YT Medical, appropriate onward medical or dermatological review may be recommended.

A Personalised Approach to Hair Restoration

Once there is a clearer understanding of the condition, we can discuss the options that may be appropriate.

Depending on the diagnosis, this could involve monitoring, management of contributing factors, medical or regenerative hair-restoration treatments, scalp therapies, surgical hair restoration or non-surgical hair replacement.

Not every form of hair loss requires — or will respond to — the same treatment.

Our aim is to provide clear information about the available options and help you make an informed decision based on your individual circumstances.
