Understanding Your Hair Loss Starts With Assessment

Hair loss can develop for many different reasons.

Two people experiencing similar thinning or shedding may have entirely different underlying conditions, and the treatment that is appropriate for one patient may not be suitable for another.

For this reason, YT Medical takes an assessment-led approach to hair restoration.

Before recommending a treatment programme, our priority is to understand the nature of your hair or scalp concern, how it has developed and whether there are factors that may require further investigation.

Why Is Hair Loss Assessment Important?

Hair loss is often described in terms of what can be seen — thinning hair, a receding hairline, excessive shedding or patches of loss.

These changes are symptoms rather than diagnoses.

Possible causes range from common forms of pattern hair loss to temporary disruption of the hair-growth cycle, autoimmune conditions, inflammatory scalp disorders and scarring alopecias.

Nutritional, hormonal and wider health factors can also contribute to hair changes in some patients.

Establishing the likely cause allows us to move away from guesswork and towards a more appropriate treatment or management plan.

Our Assessment Pathway

Depending on your individual presentation, your hair-restoration assessment may involve several stages.

Consultation & History

We begin by discussing what you have noticed and how your hair has changed.

This may include:

  • When your hair loss began
  • Whether the change was sudden or gradual
  • The pattern of hair loss
  • Increased shedding
  • Scalp symptoms
  • Family history
  • Relevant medical history
  • Medication
  • Hormonal changes
  • Recent illness or surgery
  • Pregnancy or childbirth
  • Significant weight or dietary changes
  • Stressful life events
  • Previous hair-loss treatments

These details can provide important context before the hair and scalp are examined.

Hair & Scalp Examination

The distribution of hair loss and the condition of the scalp can provide valuable information.

We may assess areas of reduced density, recession, shedding, breakage, scalp inflammation and other visible changes.

Digital Trichoscopy

Digital trichoscopy allows areas of the hair and scalp to be examined under magnification.

It can reveal features that are difficult to appreciate with the naked eye and may help distinguish between different patterns of hair loss.

Images may also provide a useful record for future comparison where monitoring is appropriate.

Further Investigation

Not every patient needs additional testing.

Where the history or pattern of hair loss suggests that wider health factors could be relevant, further investigation may be considered.

This can include targeted blood testing or onward medical assessment where appropriate.

Hair Loss Blood Testing

Looking Beyond the Scalp

Some forms of excessive shedding or diffuse thinning can be associated with underlying health factors.

Depending on your symptoms and medical history, blood testing may be considered to investigate areas such as:

  • Iron status
  • Thyroid function
  • Nutritional markers
  • Hormonal factors
  • General health indicators

Testing should be selected according to the individual rather than automatically requesting the same panel for every patient.

A blood result should also be interpreted in the wider context of your symptoms and hair-loss pattern rather than treated as a diagnosis by itself.

Digital Trichoscopy

A Closer Look at the Hair and Scalp

Trichoscopy is a non-invasive method of examining the scalp and hair under magnification.

It may allow us to assess characteristics such as:

  • Variation in hair-shaft diameter
  • Follicular density
  • Miniaturised hairs
  • Hair breakage
  • Follicular openings
  • Scaling
  • Redness and inflammation
  • Features associated with selected hair-loss conditions

Digital images can complement the consultation and physical examination and may help inform whether further investigation is appropriate.

What Happens After Your Assessment?

The purpose of assessment is not simply to give every patient a treatment.

Once the available information has been considered, we will discuss the most appropriate next steps.

These may include:

Monitoring

Some patients may benefit from establishing a baseline and reviewing changes over time.

Hair Restoration Treatment

Where a treatment is appropriate, we can discuss the available options, expected outcomes, limitations and ongoing requirements.

Scalp Management

Where an active scalp condition is present, improving scalp health may need to take priority before elective hair-restoration procedures are considered.

Further Investigation

Additional blood testing or another form of investigation may sometimes be useful.

Medical or Dermatology Referral

Certain presentations require assessment or treatment outside the scope of YT Medical.

Where features suggest an inflammatory, autoimmune or scarring condition requiring specialist medical management, appropriate onward assessment may be recommended.

When Should You Consider a Hair Loss Assessment?

You may wish to arrange an assessment if you are experiencing:

  • Progressive thinning
  • A widening parting
  • Recession around the hairline
  • Increased or excessive shedding
  • Patchy hair loss
  • Hair breakage
  • Loss of eyebrow or facial hair
  • Persistent itching, burning or tenderness
  • Scalp redness or scaling
  • A sudden change in hair density
  • Hair loss following illness, surgery or significant hormonal change
  • Concern about whether a hair transplant is appropriate

You do not need to know what type of hair loss you have before booking.

That is what the assessment process is intended to help establish.

Treatment Should Follow Understanding

The number of hair-restoration treatments available has increased considerably.

However, having more treatment options makes appropriate assessment more important, not less.

PRP, PRF, regenerative therapies, medical treatments, laser-based approaches and hair transplantation all have different roles, limitations and levels of supporting evidence.

At YT Medical, we aim to understand the problem before discussing the solution.

Book a Hair Restoration Assessment

If you are concerned about hair loss, thinning, shedding or changes to your scalp, the first step is a detailed assessment.

From there, we can help establish whether treatment, further investigation, monitoring or onward referral is the most appropriate next step.
