Blood Testing for Work, Training and Immunity Requirements

Some professions, placements and training programmes require evidence of immunity, vaccination status or screening for particular infections before an individual can undertake certain duties. This is particularly common within healthcare, dentistry and other roles where workers may be exposed to blood, bodily fluids or infectious disease.

YT Medical offers Occupational & Immunity Screening for patients who have been asked to provide particular laboratory evidence for employment, university, placement or professional-registration purposes.

Because requirements vary considerably between organisations, patients should ideally provide the exact occupational-health specification or list of tests supplied by their employer or educational institution before testing is arranged.

Hepatitis B Immunity Testing

Healthcare professionals and others with occupational exposure to blood may require evidence of protection against Hepatitis B.

Testing may include Hepatitis B Surface Antibody (Anti-HBs), which can help demonstrate whether an appropriate immune response is present following vaccination.

Depending on the purpose of testing, additional Hepatitis B markers such as Surface Antigen (HBsAg) or Core Antibody may be required to distinguish immunity following vaccination from current or previous infection.

The exact requirements can be different for healthcare workers undertaking exposure-prone procedures, and occupational-health guidance should be followed where additional clearance is necessary.

MMR Immunity

Evidence of immunity to Measles, Mumps and Rubella may be requested for selected healthcare, childcare or other occupational roles.

Blood testing can measure IgG antibodies against individual viruses where serological evidence of immunity is specifically required. However, documented vaccination history may be sufficient in some circumstances and an employer may not require antibody testing.

Patients should therefore check what evidence their occupational-health department actually requires before arranging testing.

Varicella Immunity

Varicella-Zoster Virus (VZV) IgG testing can be used to assess evidence of immunity to chickenpox.

This may be particularly relevant for healthcare workers who could come into contact with vulnerable patients and who do not have adequate documented evidence of previous vaccination or infection.

A result showing inadequate immunity may lead to a recommendation for vaccination through the appropriate occupational-health or immunisation pathway.

Tuberculosis Screening

Certain healthcare and occupational pathways may also require screening for Tuberculosis (TB). This can include an Interferon-Gamma Release Assay (IGRA), a specialist blood test that looks for an immune response associated with exposure to Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

IGRA can contribute to assessment for latent TB infection but does not, by itself, establish whether somebody has active tuberculosis.

Where an occupational-health requirement specifies TB screening, the exact test and any additional clinical assessment should be confirmed beforehand.

Blood-Borne Virus Screening

Selected roles — particularly healthcare work involving exposure-prone procedures — can require specific health clearance relating to Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and HIV.

The tests required and the way results need to be documented are determined by current occupational-health and UK healthcare-worker guidance. YT Medical can arrange appropriate laboratory tests where these have been specified, but final clearance to undertake a particular role or procedure may need to be provided by the employer’s Occupational Health service.

Bring Your Occupational Requirements

Before booking, we recommend obtaining written confirmation of exactly what your employer, university, placement provider or regulatory organisation requires.

This helps avoid unnecessary testing and ensures that the correct antibody, antigen or infection-screening test is performed. It is also important to confirm whether the organisation requires results from a particular laboratory, a specific form to be completed or formal Occupational Health sign-off.
