Assessing Liver and Kidney Function

The liver and kidneys perform essential roles throughout the body, from processing nutrients and medicines to removing waste products and maintaining fluid and electrolyte balance. Changes affecting either organ can sometimes develop without obvious symptoms, making laboratory testing useful where there are relevant health concerns, risk factors or a need to monitor existing results.

YT Medical offers Liver & Kidney Health Blood Testing incorporating selected biochemical markers that can provide information about liver-cell injury, bile flow, protein production, kidney filtration and electrolyte balance.

Which Liver Blood Tests Are Available?

A typical Liver Function Test profile may include Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT), Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP), Bilirubin and Albumin, with markers such as Gamma-Glutamyl Transferase (GGT), Total Protein, Globulin or Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST) included according to the laboratory profile and reason for testing.

ALT is an enzyme found predominantly within liver cells and can increase when these cells are irritated or damaged. ALP can rise with conditions affecting the liver or bile ducts, although it can also originate from other tissues such as bone. GGT can sometimes provide additional context where an elevated ALP is being investigated.

Bilirubin is produced through normal breakdown of red blood cells and is processed by the liver. Increased levels can have several causes and do not automatically indicate serious liver disease. Albumin is a protein produced by the liver and can provide information relevant to liver function, although low levels can also occur for reasons unrelated to the liver.

The individual results are most useful when considered together rather than interpreting one enzyme in isolation.

Which Kidney Blood Tests Are Available?

Kidney testing commonly includes Creatinine, estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR), Urea, Sodium and Potassium.

Creatinine is a waste product generated largely through normal muscle metabolism. The kidneys remove it from the bloodstream, and its concentration is used to calculate eGFR, an estimate of how efficiently the kidneys are filtering blood.

eGFR is useful for identifying and monitoring impaired kidney function, but it is still an estimate. Age, muscle mass, acute illness and other factors can influence its accuracy, and one mildly abnormal result does not necessarily establish chronic kidney disease.

Sodium and Potassium are important electrolytes whose concentrations are regulated partly by the kidneys. Significant abnormalities can have important clinical consequences and may require prompt medical assessment.

Blood and Urine Testing Work Together

Blood testing provides important information about kidney filtration, but assessment of kidney health can also require a urine Albumin-to-Creatinine Ratio (ACR). This looks for small quantities of albumin leaking into the urine and can identify kidney damage even where blood-test results remain relatively preserved.

Patients with diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease or other recognised risk factors may therefore require both blood and urine testing rather than relying on eGFR alone.

When Might Testing Be Useful?

Liver and Kidney Health testing may be considered where there are previously abnormal results, relevant medication, diabetes, hypertension, metabolic concerns or another reason to monitor organ function. Liver testing may also form part of broader investigation where alcohol intake, metabolic liver disease or medication could be relevant.

Abnormal results do not diagnose the underlying condition themselves. Persistent or significant abnormalities may require repeat testing, further blood investigations, imaging or GP or specialist assessment.

Symptoms such as jaundice, severe abdominal pain, markedly reduced urine output, significant swelling or rapidly deteriorating health require appropriate medical assessment rather than routine private screening alone.
