Heart & Cardiovascular Health
Understanding Your Cardiovascular Risk
Cardiovascular disease includes conditions affecting the heart and blood vessels, including coronary heart disease and stroke. Many important cardiovascular risk factors produce no obvious symptoms, which is why measurements such as cholesterol, blood pressure and blood glucose can provide useful information before a person feels unwell.
YT Medical offers Heart & Cardiovascular Health Blood Testing for patients who want to assess selected risk markers, monitor previously abnormal results or obtain additional information as part of a wider preventative-health approach.
Blood tests are only one part of cardiovascular assessment. Age, blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, weight, kidney health and family history all contribute to overall risk and should be considered alongside laboratory results.
Which Cardiovascular Blood Tests Are Available?
The core investigation is typically a full Lipid Profile, which can include Total Cholesterol, LDL Cholesterol, HDL Cholesterol, Non-HDL Cholesterol and Triglycerides.
LDL and other non-HDL cholesterol particles can contribute to the development of atherosclerosis, in which fatty material accumulates within arterial walls. HDL provides different information and is used alongside the wider lipid profile when cardiovascular risk is assessed.
Triglycerides are another form of fat carried within the blood and can be influenced by factors including diet, alcohol intake, diabetes and metabolic health.
Advanced Lipid Markers
Selected patients may also consider additional markers such as Apolipoprotein B (ApoB) and Lipoprotein(a), or Lp(a) where available and clinically appropriate.
ApoB reflects the number of atherogenic lipoprotein particles circulating within the bloodstream and can provide additional information beyond standard cholesterol measurements in some circumstances.
Lp(a) is largely genetically determined and can contribute to cardiovascular risk independently of conventional LDL cholesterol. It does not normally need frequent repeated measurement because levels tend to remain relatively stable, but it can be particularly relevant where there is a strong family history of premature cardiovascular disease or unexpectedly high cardiovascular risk.
Glucose, Kidney and Liver Health
HbA1c or glucose testing can be included because diabetes is an important cardiovascular risk factor. Kidney Function may also be relevant because chronic kidney disease is associated with increased cardiovascular risk.
Liver Function Tests may be considered as part of broader metabolic assessment and can also be relevant where lipid-lowering medication is being initiated or monitored through an appropriate prescribing service.
Where symptoms suggest thyroid dysfunction, TSH may be measured because an underactive thyroid can contribute to abnormal cholesterol levels.
Interpreting Cardiovascular Results
There is no single cholesterol number that determines whether somebody will or will not develop cardiovascular disease. Lipid results should be combined with wider risk factors, and tools such as QRISK may be used within primary care to estimate an individual’s longer-term cardiovascular risk.
Significantly abnormal cholesterol results can also raise the possibility of an inherited lipid disorder such as familial hypercholesterolaemia, particularly where there is a family history of early heart disease.
Where testing indicates a high cardiovascular risk, possible diabetes, significant lipid abnormality or another condition requiring treatment, appropriate GP or specialist assessment should follow.
Blood Tests Do Not Replace Urgent Assessment
Private cardiovascular blood testing is intended for risk assessment and monitoring rather than investigation of an acute medical emergency.
New or severe chest pain, significant breathlessness, fainting or symptoms suggestive of a heart attack or stroke require urgent medical assessment rather than waiting for routine blood-test results.
