Hair Loss Blood Tests
Investigating Possible Internal Contributors to Hair Loss
Hair loss can arise from many different processes. Some conditions are primarily genetic or inflammatory, while others can be influenced by iron deficiency, thyroid dysfunction, nutritional problems, illness, hormonal changes or other systemic factors. Blood testing can therefore be valuable for selected patients, particularly when hair shedding is diffuse, has developed relatively suddenly or occurs alongside other symptoms.
At YT Medical, Hair Loss Blood Testing forms part of our wider Hair Restoration assessment pathway. The purpose is not to order every available marker for every patient, but to investigate factors that could realistically contribute to the pattern of hair loss identified during consultation.
Which Blood Tests May Be Considered?
The precise tests depend on the patient’s history and hair-loss pattern. Investigations may include a Full Blood Count, iron and ferritin, thyroid-function testing and selected vitamin or mineral markers, with hormonal or additional testing considered where symptoms make these relevant.
For example, increased diffuse shedding can sometimes occur alongside iron deficiency or thyroid disease. Where a patient also has irregular menstrual cycles, increased facial hair or other signs suggesting androgen excess, selected hormone testing may provide additional information.
No single blood panel is appropriate for every type of alopecia. Male and female pattern hair loss can often be recognised clinically, while autoimmune or scarring alopecias require a different diagnostic approach that cannot be replaced by checking nutritional markers.
Blood Testing and Telogen Effluvium
Blood testing can be particularly useful where Telogen Effluvium is suspected. This form of diffuse shedding can follow events such as significant illness, surgery, major weight loss, nutritional deficiency, medication changes or other physical stresses, although sometimes no clear trigger can be identified.
Assessment remains important because Telogen Effluvium can resemble other forms of hair thinning and can occur at the same time as pattern hair loss. Blood tests may help exclude factors such as thyroid dysfunction and iron deficiency, but the diagnosis is not based on blood results alone.
Iron, Vitamins and Supplements
Patients experiencing hair loss are frequently advised to take multiple supplements, but supplementation is most useful when there is an actual dietary requirement or deficiency to address. Taking high doses of vitamins and minerals without demonstrating a need does not guarantee faster or thicker hair growth and can sometimes cause unwanted effects.
Where testing identifies low iron stores or another nutritional abnormality, the next step is to consider both replacement and the reason it has developed. Recurrent iron deficiency, for example, may require investigation of dietary intake, menstrual blood loss or another underlying cause rather than indefinite supplementation without follow-up.
Blood Tests Do Not Diagnose Every Hair Condition
Normal blood results do not mean that hair loss is imaginary or that no hair disorder is present. Androgenetic alopecia, Alopecia Areata and the various scarring alopecias can occur despite routine blood markers being within normal ranges.
This is why blood testing at YT Medical is combined with hair and scalp assessment rather than offered as a standalone answer to hair loss. Digital Trichoscopy and clinical examination can provide information about follicle density, miniaturisation, inflammation and the pattern of loss that blood tests cannot show.

What Happens After Testing?
Results are interpreted alongside the findings from your hair-loss assessment. A nutritional or thyroid abnormality may influence your treatment plan, while results that indicate a wider medical problem may require GP or specialist follow-up.
Where no relevant abnormalities are identified, treatment can remain focused on the hair condition itself rather than continuing to search for increasingly obscure laboratory explanations.
Book a Hair Loss Assessment
If you are experiencing increased shedding, thinning or an unexplained change in your hair, arrange a Hair & Scalp Assessment at YT Medical to determine whether blood testing should form part of your investigation.
