Fertility & Reproductive Health
Blood Testing for Fertility and Reproductive Health
Fertility and reproductive health are influenced by a complex interaction between hormones, age, ovulation, reproductive anatomy and general health. Blood testing can provide useful information about ovulation, ovarian response, reproductive hormone function and selected endocrine factors, but no single blood test can provide a complete measure of fertility.
YT Medical offers targeted Fertility & Reproductive Health Blood Testing for patients who would like to investigate specific concerns or obtain selected hormone measurements. Testing is chosen according to sex, age, menstrual history, symptoms and the reason for investigation rather than automatically performing the same panel for everybody.
Which Fertility Blood Tests Are Available?
For women, testing may include Progesterone, Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH), Luteinising Hormone (LH), Oestradiol and Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH). Selected patients may also benefit from Prolactin, Testosterone, SHBG and Thyroid Function Tests where symptoms or clinical history make these relevant.
Progesterone is commonly measured during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle to help establish whether ovulation has occurred. The timing matters and should be based on the individual’s cycle rather than assuming that every patient should be tested on the same calendar day.
FSH and LH can provide information about reproductive hormone signalling and may be particularly relevant where menstrual cycles are irregular. Oestradiol can provide additional context in selected circumstances.
AMH is widely described as an ovarian reserve marker. It can be useful when estimating likely ovarian response within assisted-conception treatment, but it should not be interpreted as a simple fertility score or used to predict whether somebody will conceive naturally.
Male Reproductive Hormone Testing
For men, blood testing may include Testosterone, FSH, LH, SHBG and Prolactin where there is a clinical reason to assess reproductive hormone function.
These results can help investigate hormonal factors that may influence sperm production or sexual function, particularly where previous fertility investigations have identified a concern.
Blood tests are only one part of male fertility assessment. Semen analysis remains the principal laboratory investigation of sperm concentration, motility and morphology, and this is a separate test rather than a blood test. Where semen analysis or specialist fertility investigation is required, an appropriate fertility pathway may be recommended.
Fertility Testing Needs Context
Hormone levels naturally fluctuate and can be affected by menstrual-cycle timing, medication, hormonal contraception and fertility treatment. A result falling outside a laboratory reference range therefore does not automatically identify the cause of a fertility problem.
Likewise, normal blood results cannot confirm that there are no other factors affecting conception. Fallopian-tube problems, uterine conditions, endometriosis and sperm-related factors cannot be excluded through a female hormone blood panel alone.
The role of YT Medical’s blood-testing service is to provide useful targeted information and identify where further fertility, gynaecological, endocrine or reproductive assessment may be appropriate.
