RF Microneedling
Combining Microneedling With Controlled Radiofrequency Energy
RF Microneedling combines fine-needle skin treatment with radiofrequency energy to create controlled stimulation at selected depths within the skin. The needles enter the tissue and deliver RF energy beneath the surface, creating localised heating that initiates a wound-healing and collagen-remodelling response.
This differs from conventional Medical Microneedling, which creates controlled microchannels mechanically but does not deliver radiofrequency energy. At YT Medical, RF Microneedling may be considered where a patient requires a stronger tissue-remodelling approach for concerns involving skin texture, selected scars, fine lines or mild laxity.
What Can RF Microneedling Treat?
RF Microneedling may be considered for uneven skin texture, fine lines, enlarged-looking pores, selected atrophic acne scars and mild changes in skin firmness. By adjusting needle depth and treatment parameters, different layers of tissue can be targeted according to the treatment area and objective.
Acne scars require particular assessment because different scar types respond differently. Rolling, boxcar and narrow deeper scars may require different approaches, and RF Microneedling may sometimes form part of a wider Scar Remodelling plan rather than being used alone.
Patients primarily concerned with more significant tissue laxity may instead benefit from HIFU, EndoFibre Lift or another tightening procedure, while superficial pigmentation or surface damage may require a laser or skin-focused treatment.
What Happens During Treatment?
The skin is prepared and an appropriate anaesthetic approach may be used before treatment. A specialist handpiece containing fine needles is then applied systematically across the selected area. Once the needles reach the planned depth, controlled radiofrequency energy is delivered within the tissue.
Temporary redness, swelling, warmth, sensitivity and pinpoint bleeding can occur afterwards. The skin may feel dry, rough or more sensitive during the early recovery period, and appropriate skincare and sun protection are important while the barrier recovers.
Treatment is usually considered as a programme where progressive collagen remodelling is required, although the number and spacing of sessions depend on the concern and individual response.
Results Develop Over Time
Recent clinical evidence supports RF Microneedling for facial rejuvenation, skin texture and selected acne scars, but collagen remodelling is gradual. Improvement therefore continues after the visible redness from treatment has settled.
The eventual result depends on treatment depth, skin characteristics, severity of the concern and the individual’s biological response. Established scars can usually be improved rather than completely removed, and skin-tightening results should not be compared with surgical lifting.
Understanding the Risks
RF Microneedling is an energy-based medical aesthetic procedure and should not be treated as risk-free simply because it is minimally invasive. Alongside common temporary redness and swelling, more significant complications have been reported with some uses of RF Microneedling devices, including burns, scarring, unwanted fat loss and nerve injury.
Appropriate device selection, treatment depth and understanding of the anatomy beneath the skin are therefore particularly important. The relevant benefits, limitations and risks will be discussed before you decide whether to proceed.
RF Microneedling or Medical Microneedling?
Conventional Medical Microneedling can be an appropriate option where controlled mechanical stimulation is sufficient. RF Microneedling adds thermal energy within the tissue and may be selected where additional remodelling or tightening is desired.
The more intensive treatment is not automatically the better treatment. Your consultation will determine which approach offers the most appropriate balance for your skin and objectives.
