LED Skin Therapy
Non-Invasive Light Therapy for the Skin
LED Skin Therapy uses specific wavelengths of light to interact with biological processes within the skin without creating the controlled injury associated with laser resurfacing, microneedling or chemical peeling. This process is commonly referred to as photobiomodulation, in which carefully selected light energy is absorbed by cells and can influence processes involved in cellular activity, inflammation and tissue repair.
At YT Medical, LED Skin Therapy may be considered as a gentle standalone treatment or as a supportive element within a wider skin programme. It is particularly suited to patients looking for a non-invasive treatment with minimal downtime, although the benefits and appropriate protocol depend on the wavelength used, the condition being treated and the individual patient’s skin.
How Does LED Skin Therapy Work?
Different wavelengths of visible and near-infrared light penetrate the skin to different depths and interact with different biological targets. Red and near-infrared photobiomodulation have been studied for their effects on cellular activity, tissue repair and aspects of collagen production, while other wavelengths can have different applications within dermatology and aesthetic skin treatment.
Unlike an ablative laser, LED treatment does not deliberately vaporise or resurface the skin. The energy levels are substantially lower and the objective is to influence cellular responses rather than produce significant thermal injury. For this reason, LED Skin Therapy usually involves little or no visible recovery.
The wavelength, treatment duration and frequency matter. LED therapy should therefore be delivered according to a defined treatment protocol rather than assuming that any coloured light will produce the same biological effect.
What Can LED Skin Therapy Help With?
Depending on the treatment protocol, LED Skin Therapy may be considered for general skin rejuvenation, fine textural changes and support of the skin’s natural recovery processes. Certain forms of visible-light therapy have also been investigated for acne, although active acne is a medical skin condition and more significant disease may require an established medical treatment pathway.
LED therapy can also be incorporated around selected professional skin procedures where supporting recovery is appropriate. It does not, however, replace treatments designed to address deeper structural concerns such as established acne scars, significant laxity or deeper pigmentation.
For these concerns, Medical Microneedling, RF Microneedling, Chemical Peels, CO₂ Fractional Laser, Pico Laser or another treatment may provide a more appropriate degree of intervention.
Treatment and Recovery
LED Skin Therapy is performed externally, with the treatment area exposed to the selected light source for a predetermined period. Patients typically experience little more than warmth or the brightness of the light during treatment, and appropriate eye protection is used where required.
There is generally minimal downtime, making LED particularly attractive where a lower-intensity skin treatment is desired. Even so, suitability should still be assessed. Certain medicines, photosensitivity disorders or active skin conditions may affect whether light treatment is appropriate, so relevant medical history and medication should be disclosed before beginning a programme.
What Results Can I Expect?
Clinical research supports a role for photobiomodulation in selected skin applications, including aspects of facial rejuvenation, but outcomes depend heavily on the wavelength, energy delivered and treatment schedule. Improvement tends to be subtle and progressive rather than dramatic.
A course of sessions may be recommended because biological responses develop over repeated treatment. LED Skin Therapy should not be compared directly with an intensive resurfacing procedure, and patients wanting a greater degree of correction may require another technology.
