Non-Invasive Treatment for Skin Laxity

HIFU, or High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound, is a non-invasive treatment used to target selected depths beneath the surface of the skin with focused ultrasound energy. The energy produces controlled thermal effects within the targeted tissue while leaving the surface of the skin largely intact, stimulating a healing response and longer-term collagen remodelling.

At YT Medical, HIFU may be considered for selected patients experiencing mild to moderate facial or neck laxity who want to improve firmness without injectable treatment or surgery. The procedure is particularly associated with areas where declining tissue support has begun to affect facial definition.

How Does HIFU Work?

HIFU concentrates ultrasound energy at predetermined depths beneath the skin. Rather than heating the entire area uniformly, the technology creates controlled points of thermal stimulation within selected tissue layers. This initiates processes associated with tissue contraction and the subsequent production and remodelling of collagen.

Because these biological changes take time, HIFU results develop progressively. Some patients may notice earlier changes in firmness, but the broader treatment response generally becomes more apparent over the following weeks and months.

The depth and amount of energy used must be appropriate to the patient’s anatomy. Different areas of the face contain different thicknesses of skin, fat and underlying structures, which is why treatment planning and technique are important.

Which Areas Can Be Treated?

HIFU is commonly considered for concerns involving the lower face, jawline, beneath the chin and neck, with other areas assessed according to the individual and the technology being used.

The treatment can be useful where early tissue laxity has reduced definition but there is not a large amount of excess skin. It does not physically remove loose skin and cannot reproduce the degree of lifting or repositioning achieved through surgery.

Patients with significant volume loss may also require a different approach. Tightening tissue does not replace lost structural volume, just as adding filler does not necessarily correct laxity. Your consultation helps identify which change is actually creating the concern.

Treatment and Recovery

HIFU is performed without surgical incisions. During treatment, pulses of ultrasound energy are delivered systematically across the planned areas. Patients can experience heat, tingling, tenderness or brief sharper sensations as energy is delivered, with comfort varying according to the area and individual sensitivity.

Temporary redness, swelling, tenderness or altered sensation can occur afterwards. Although HIFU is generally associated with limited visible recovery, it is not completely without risk. Uncommonly, inappropriate energy delivery or depth can result in thermal injury, prolonged altered sensation, nerve irritation or unwanted changes in underlying tissue.

What Results Can I Expect?

Current clinical evidence supports HIFU as an option for improving selected facial and neck laxity, but the amount of change varies. It is best suited to patients seeking a gradual, non-surgical improvement rather than a dramatic lift.

Results depend on age, tissue quality, degree of laxity, anatomy and individual collagen response. The natural ageing process also continues after treatment, so maintenance may eventually be considered where appropriate.

HIFU or Another Tightening Treatment?

YT Medical offers several treatments for laxity, including FirmaLift™, RF Microneedling, EndoFibre Lift, PDO Threads and regenerative biostimulation. These treatments work at different tissue depths and are not interchangeable.

Your consultation allows the underlying cause and degree of laxity to be assessed before the most appropriate approach is recommended.
