Gentle Exfoliation for Smoother-Looking Skin

Dermaplaning is a professional exfoliating treatment that uses a sterile specialist blade to carefully remove superficial dead skin cells and fine vellus hair, commonly known as peach fuzz, from the surface of the face.

Unlike treatments designed to stimulate deeper collagen remodelling, Dermaplaning works primarily at the outermost surface of the skin. At YT Medical, it may be considered for patients looking for a relatively straightforward treatment to improve smoothness and create a fresher, more refined skin surface with little interruption to normal activities.

What Can Dermaplaning Help With?

The immediate effect of Dermaplaning is principally one of surface exfoliation and temporary removal of fine facial hair. Patients may notice that the skin feels smoother and makeup sits more evenly following treatment.

It can be useful where dullness or an accumulation of superficial skin cells is affecting skin texture, but it should not be confused with deeper resurfacing treatments. Dermaplaning cannot remove established acne scars, significantly tighten loose skin or treat deeper pigmentation in the way that appropriately selected microneedling, chemical peel or laser procedures may.

This makes it a useful lighter treatment for some patients, while those seeking more substantial correction may be better suited to another YT Medical skin pathway.

Will the Hair Grow Back Thicker?

Dermaplaning does not alter the hair follicle, so removing vellus hair at the skin surface does not cause it to grow back thicker, darker or in greater numbers.

The hair will gradually return because Dermaplaning is a temporary removal method, but its underlying biological characteristics remain unchanged. This differs from Laser Hair Removal, which targets suitable pigmented follicles with the objective of progressively reducing hair growth.

Patients with sudden or excessive coarse facial hair may require assessment of the underlying cause rather than relying solely on surface removal.

What Happens During Treatment?

The skin is cleansed and prepared before a sterile blade is passed carefully across the treatment area at an appropriate angle. This progressively removes superficial skin cells and fine vellus hair without intentionally creating the deeper controlled injury associated with Medical Microneedling or ablative resurfacing.

The skin can appear slightly red or feel more sensitive immediately afterwards, although recovery is generally limited. Appropriate hydration and sun protection are important following exfoliation, and stronger active skincare may need to be temporarily avoided according to the condition of the skin.

Is Dermaplaning Suitable for Everyone?

Dermaplaning may not be appropriate where there is active inflammatory acne, an active skin infection, significant irritation or another condition affecting the integrity of the skin barrier. Treating inflamed areas can increase irritation and the risk of unwanted complications.

Although the procedure is relatively superficial, potential risks include small cuts, irritation, infection, temporary changes in pigmentation and, rarely, scarring.

Assessment allows us to determine whether Dermaplaning is suitable or whether a treatment such as BioRePeel, Chemical Peeling, Medical Microneedling or another skin procedure would better address the concern.
